Mardi Gras celebration cut short due to drunk driver

Mardi Gras is a popular event for people from around the world. People flock to Louisiana, heading to New Orleans to enjoy parades and festivities. Some people take it too far, though, and injure others due to their negligence.

A Mardi Gras celebration came to an early end when a truck collided with a parade crowd. Twenty-eight people were injured by the vehicle. The driver reportedly had a blood alcohol level close to three times the legal limit.

The 25-year-old driver now faces one count of hit-and-run driving, one count of reckless operation and two counts for first-degree vehicular negligence resulting in injury. He could face more charges pending further investigation.

The crash took place in the evening at around 6:42 p.m. The driver allegedly lost control and turned into the crowd. The man's blood alcohol concentration was shockingly high at .232 percent. He provided a breath sample for the police on request. He was arrested and has been placed in jail pending bail of $125,000.

The victims injured at the Krewe of Endymion parade ranged in age from 3 to their 40s. Very fortunately, none of the injuries were life-threatening. In total, 21 people had to be hospitalized. One of those individuals was a female police officer at the scene. Seven others who were hurt did not seek medical transportation but may have sought medical treatment. Emergency responders were on the scene in seconds, as some people in the crowds were emergency responders who were tourists at the event.

Crashes like this are completely preventable. If you or a loved one is hurt due to a drunk driver, you have the right to pursue a claim.
