Falls affect thousands in nursing facilities every year

Living in a nursing home can be quite a change for patients, but it should be a good one. The staff is meant to help your loved one get in and out of bed if necessary, to help with meals and to make sure your family member receives medications and other necessities in a timely manner.

One of the problems that comes up often in nursing homes is the fall risk. Thousands of people are injured or die from falls in nursing homes every year. Some injuries that can result range from traumatic brain injuries to broken bones. If someone survives and suffers these injuries, their lives may immediately be affected, lowering their overall quality of life.

Take for example a person who falls getting out of bed. The individual breaks a hip, which means he or she must be immobile for some time. For an elder, this can mean a loss of significant mobility. Even after the bone heals, dementia, Alzheimer's Disease, balance issues and other problems can make it hard for the person to learn to walk again. That means the person is now wheelchair bound.

It's important to look into what the nursing facility offers to prevent falls. Full-time aides can help more patients, and a full staff means no one should go long without help. For those who are a fall risk, bed rails can help prevent falls.

Your loved one shouldn't have to go through the pain and suffering of a fall. If the nursing facility is negligent and fails to prevent injury, you could have a case.
