2 killed in tragic distracted-driving accident

Distracting driving isn't just texting or talking on the phone. Talking to passengers, being distracted by children or even looking away from the road to admire the view can be distractions that impact your ability to drive safely. When a person doesn't keep his or her eyes on the road, then accidents can happen that lead to deaths or serious injuries.

That's what happened in this case. A distracted-driving collision lead to the loss of life in Louisiana recently. A Dec. 29 newscast reported that a two-car collision left two people dead. A 21-year-old man had been talking to a 20-year-old passenger when he drifted into the opposite, southbound lane.

It was around 5:30 p.m., when he struck a Kia Sportage. Multiple people were injured on impact. The news reports that the 69-year-old driver of the Sportage was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash.

Her 91-year-old passenger had to be rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but she later succumbed to her injuries. A third passenger in the Sportage, a 60-year-old woman, survived with minor injuries. The news did not say if the 20- and 21-year-old men suffered any injuries.

Police believe that the 21-year-old man was distracted by the conversation going on in the vehicle when he drifted out of his lane. They don't suspect that impairment or speeding were a cause of the accident. As of the time of the news report, charges were pending against the young man and the crash was still being investigated.

Even if a person isn't distracted when he or she causes an accident, the injuries you suffer from negligent driving are serious and need to be paid for. The driver should be held accountable for his or her actions. An attorney can help you do so through a civil lawsuit for damages.
